Between Spain and Morocco: Tarifa–Tangier and Algeciras–Tanger Med ferries, and low-cost flights
A one-hour crossing from Tarifa, Madrid–Marrakech flights from €15, and a tunnel under the strait that will not arrive before 2035: how to cross from one shore to the other.
Published
Fourteen kilometres separate the two shores of the Strait of Gibraltar. In 2030 you will cross them the same way you do today: by ferry or by plane. The rail tunnel that has been talked about for fifty years is not expected before 2035–2040.
The ferries
| Route | Operators | Duration | Frequency | Foot-passenger fare observed (26/08/2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tarifa – Tangier Ville | Baleària, AML | ≈ 1h | ≈ 17 a day | from $36 (Baleària advertises “from €70”, 15% off on returns) |
| Algeciras – Tanger Med | Baleària, FRS/DFDS, Naviera Armas, AML | ≈ 1h30 | ≈ 24 a day | from $33, up to several hundred dollars with a car |
Two decisive differences:
- Tangier Ville is the city-centre port: you step ashore on foot in the medina, and the Al Boraq station is 3 km away. This is the route to choose if you have no car.
- Tanger Med is 45 km east of Tangier: you then need a bus or a taxi (allow 45 minutes to 1 hour). Convenient by car, less so on foot.
Worth noting: FRS/DFDS ended the Tarifa–Tangier route on 4 May 2025 after 25 years; Baleària now operates it. In strong winds (the levante), crossings from Tarifa can be cancelled and switched to Algeciras.
There are also ferries from Almería/Málaga/Motril – Nador or Al Hoceima (longer) and Barcelona – Tanger Med (around thirty hours): check with the operators.
Flying
- Madrid – Marrakech: Ryanair from €14.99 one way (recorded on 30 August 2026 for a late-September flight).
- Barcelona – Tangier: 2h06, 3 to 5 flights a day, from $39 (Air Arabia Maroc, Ryanair, Vueling, Royal Air Maroc), typical return $91–231.
- Lisbon – Casablanca / Marrakech: direct services (TAP, Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair) — fares unverified.
- Casablanca (Mohammed V) is Royal Air Maroc’s hub; Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, Agadir and Rabat all receive direct low-cost flights from Spain, Portugal and France.
On match days, flights between the two shores will fill up fast: book as soon as the schedule is published.
The tunnel under the strait: not for 2030
The rail tunnel project (42 km, of which 27.7 km under the sea, in two single-track bores) is led by SECEGSA (Spain) and SNED (Morocco). A study from December 2025 judges it technically viable, at around €8.7 billion on the Spanish side. Spain confirmed the consulting engineers on 30 December 2025, and an updated preliminary design is expected in 2026. Envisaged opening: 2035 to 2040. In other words, outside the World Cup timetable.
Formalities
Morocco is not in the Schengen area: a passport is compulsory (see our guide to entry requirements). Checks take place at the port or the airport; allow extra time at boarding, particularly at Tanger Med on busy days.
