Estadio Monumental (Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti)

The Monumental in Buenos Aires, home of River Plate and the Argentina national team, hosted the 1978 World Cup final. With 85,018 seats, it is already the largest stadium in South America.

The works began in June 2026: a fifth stand and a full roof (a translucent membrane with an acoustic layer) carried by 100 columns, using 1,684 tonnes of steel. Target capacity: 101,000 seats. Cost: $145 million according to Infobae, funded by an international loan and a ten-year naming rights deal. Announced duration: 36 months, with handover in 2029.

The stadium will host Argentina’s centenary match — the first World Cup match at the Monumental since 1978.
