“La Catedral” (53,331 seats) meets FIFA standards, but Bilbao has set out its conditions and has to make up its mind before November 2026.
The new San Mamés opened in September 2013 on the site of the old, century-old ground. With 53,331 seats, a landmark illuminated façade and a city-centre setting on the banks of the Nervión, it hosted the 2025 Europa League final.
2030
On 1 June 2026, the Basque Country merged the Bilbao and San Sebastián bids into a joint candidacy, with two matches per stadium. In late June, the city of Bilbao set out conditions for FIFA (free transport for ticket holders, commercial requirements, a refusal to accept “excessive costs”) and has to decide before November 2026. No decision had been published as of 30 August 2026.
Getting there
Metro lines 1 and 2, San Mamés station, or the tram. Zone 1 metro ticket: €2.00 in cash, €1.02 with a Barik card (which halves the fare). Check your route on metrobilbao.eus.
