La Cartuja (Estadio de La Cartuja de Sevilla)

Built for the 1999 World Athletics Championships on the island of La Cartuja, the stadium long suffered from its running track. The track was removed in 2025: capacity rose from 52,000 to 70,000 seats ahead of the Copa del Rey final in April 2025.

With no permanent resident club, it hosts the Spain national team and, temporarily, Real Betis while work is carried out at the Benito Villamarín.

2030

The works programme for 2030 is costed at €119 million (down from €137 million). After a phase worth around €10 million in late 2025 – early 2026 (south and west entrances, floodlighting, interiors), the heaviest works are scheduled for 2028, once Betis has left.

Funding: according to a report on the Junta’s Government Council published on 14 October 2026 and credited to ABC Sevilla, the Junta will grant a repayable loan to the company Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla (Junta 40%, State 25%, Seville city 19%, Diputación 13%, Sevilla FC 1.5%, Real Betis 1.5%). The amount and the interest rate are to be set during 2027, with four years of grace and a maximum of ten years of amortisation, subject to an economic and financial plan approved by the Culture department. That same report puts the upgrade at around €100 million, against €119 million in the programme cited above: we have no document that would settle which figure is right.

Transport: the stadium is served by neither the metro nor the train. On 17 June 2026, the Junta de Andalucía asked the national government to extend the Cercanías line to the stadium and to connect it to metro line 1 at Blas Infante; as of 16 October 2026 we have found no published decision since: the project is neither funded nor approved.

Getting there

TUSSAM city buses (€1.40 a journey) or a walk from the centre (about 4 km). On match days, special services are usually laid on. Seville metro: €1.35 to €1.80 depending on the number of zones crossed; tourist travel card €5 (one day) or €10 (three days).
